Valentines Day...what do you think?

Last year, I really loved the Valentines we created. I might even say it was a fun project. This year, the kids seemed to lack any interest in participating/creating. I still had plans to make our Valentines, until I was at Target surrounded by the (ugly) things. The price point was right, and even included a pencil. 8 boxes, ranging from Hello Kitty to Mad Libs, I was done. Even Jojo (he is 2) participates this year his simply read "To: My Friend". No need for the teachers to have to deal with sorting, right? And, I didn't have to wait for the class list to finish them. 90 Valentines later, I am left wondering, is Valentines Day just kind of a racket? Reader Question: What do you do to celebrate this "holiday" with your kids? I've picked up a couple items already, I want it (the kids) to feel special, but not to over-do-it either.

Katie has said good-bye to ballet and tap (she complained that tap was too loud) and is saying hello to gymnastics. I missed her first class, but my friend CP took some pics and her daughter Sophie graciously was Katie's partner. Fast friends, I suspect and lots of fun! CP did text me at the end of the class to say that Katie suffered a twisted ankle, I can report she was not limping when I got home.

I knew (with four kids) I would eventually get a call from school about behavior. Yesterday was the first call. Sam had an altercation (with another student) yesterday and then decided to deny everything (lie) to the teacher. Sam was in the wrong. I was prepared to get the call, but I wasn't prepared to react to the call. This is why I blog about it. Not to through Sam under the bus,--he made a mistake. I wish I had considered how I wanted to respond to the information and what our plan would be at home to handle it. I literally asked the teacher "what would you do?". My advice to you, is though each situation will be unique, consider how you plan to respond. Here is what I did:

When I got off the phone with his teacher, I let Sam know that she had called. He said "I know". I asked if he wanted to talk about it now or privately. He opted for privately--meaning not in front of Jack. Later, he explained what happened and we talked about how he can't use unkind wordsand certainly can't use his fists in a way (he did NOT hit anyone) that is hurtful (or just plain scary). And, about not telling the truth when he was asked was a problem too. I decided no play time outside today (or tomorrow) and no computer/tv/games. Anyway, after dinner and homework, I called all the kids over and Sam shared what happened with both Jack and Katie. Eyes got pretty big when we talked about the possibility of going to the principal's office and how grown ups go to jail when they behave badly (yay, I pulled the jail-card). And, then of course, he had to tell Mitch about it too. I hope he will apologize to his friend and teacher today, but I know he is also embarrassed, so not sure how that will play out.

***As, I spoke with my mother about this, she said "Sam is just like you". I said "I know". She also used the word "stubborn". I have been blessed with an amazing little boy, he just happens to be the male-version of me. Did I say he was amazing? Wink.

The last week or so, I thought I noticed a balding spot on Jack's head. I thought, oh, it's just from his hat. But, I kept noticing it. I looked closer and it was "not right". I started to get nervous, I was worried about his diet, anxiety, his health. After some thought and questioning it hit me (and Mitch) like a ton of bricks. When Jack does his homework he twists his hair. He was actually breaking off his hair. So, to fix the problem, a buzz cut (I bet we took 3 inches off!!). Thankfully for him, he had actually asked for a shorter do and thankfully for me/us, it was not a major health scare.

This is a shout out to four people who lifted my spirits today. First to Em-dogger (Ruby) who reminded me about "passing the dime", to her husband, Tim, who it was completely appropriate for me to say "I love you" to while on the phone with him today, my husband for laughing with me about it, and to my sister who originated "pass the dime"
"Pass the dime" refers to that moment when something is more than a dollar and a friend hands you the change (a dime) that you need. But, it's really a phrase for those moments when you come up short and fall to your knees and your friend (or sister) swoop in and help you back up on your feet. I love these people today.

Jojo is pretty particular about what he wants to wear. It's not uncommon for him to wear short sleeves in cold weather or layer 2-3 shirts because he likes the characters on the front. This morning, I came out of the bathroom to hear Mitch say "Will picked out his shirt". I looked over to see him in the hallway wearing a pretty bad (and tight) reindeer sweater. I did nothing about it.

I feel like I got caught on the playground with the school bully this week. There is a parent from our elementary school that keeps a blog about schools/education. He seems to like to point out the flaws of our elementary school (he has children there), administration, and district. He is great at "stirring the pot". I agree in "stirring the pot", questioning actions and behavior, and accountability. Anyway, after reading a post on Monday, I shrugged my shoulders (I may have even rolled my eyes) and went on with my day. Then I got annoyed enough the following day to leave a comment/response to the post. A fairly calm and "vanilla" comment, but a comment, a response--I couldn't sit back silently. Now I wish I would have just not said anything at all. He, of course had a response, and went on to point out I was the PTA President (because I was brave enough to not post anonymously) and that the "PTA is too conflict-avoidant and too ready to support the school’s administration in whatever it chooses to do". Annoying. I am a parent volunteer and this bullshit has left me wondering, why the heck I bother caring so much. ADDITIONALLY This parent was quick to point out (in his response) that he wanted a link from the school's PTA Blog (which I maintain AS A VOLUNTEER) to his blog/opinion and was refused. He was refused because the PTA blog is not for opinions and editorial, but for school announcements and newsletter content. I now wonder how I might react if I run into this parent at a meeting, event, or in the hallway of the school. I can only hope I keep my composure and keep on walking...

Back in early December I got sick. Really sick. One of the symptoms leading up to my illness was chills and general coldness. A week of feeling ridiculously cold. This is also the same time I was finalize Christmas shopping. On Christmas Santa delivered the following items to me: a flannel bathrobe, cuddle-duds, Ugg boots, a hooded sweatshirt, a jacket, and a heated/electric blanket. Are you noticing a theme?

My father-in-law emailed this to me yesterday. The boys attend a holiday luncheon with him each year, play games, and recieve a small gift. Bow has been removed

I'd like to catch you up a bit. So, last week (around Dec 6th) I felt incredibly tired. I went to bed around 8:30 each night, so exhausted I could hardly move. Mitch left town on Thursday the 8th for a wedding in Florida. I went down for the count on Friday, the 9th at about 10 am. Yay, it hit like a ton of bricks. I had been at work and at 9:30 decided I needed to go home. I could not get off the couch---body aches, chills, sick. Around 2 pm that day I picked up my cell phone to coordinate "kids". My in-laws picked up the big kids, the owner of the daycare brought Jojo home, and my friend TT managed dinner, baths, and bed times while I curled up in misery. Saturday morning urgent care and general unhealthy-ness until yesterday, Wednesday December 14. I am grateful that the antibiotics and steroids kicked in mid-day Saturday and Mitch returned home on Sunday. Though delayed, Christmas preparation and fun is in full swing. And, the dollar-store shopping has begun which has been a real hoot! Hope you are enjoying the final 11 days until Christmas!

I must be out of my mind, but I am trying hard to make the holidays memorable after my mom said something about "this is what you kids will remember" to me a few weeks ago. She was right. It's difficult to do crafts, do this, do that, decorate, and create traditions with the amount of "mayhem", but it's important I try. So, on this weekends agenda---a visit to the mall-Santa, pine cone ornaments and ginger bread house. Cross your fingers, send good vibes, and remind me to be patient. And everyone goes to bed early!

Sibling Love At Its Finest

We started a sticker chart yesterday. Team Mayhem (consisting of Jack, Sam, & Kate) are trying really hard to stay in their beds all night. Currently they are all sleeping in one room (Kate on a trundle) with night light, so there is no need to be scared and to come into our room at mid-night (something happening since before Halloween). The rule: they all have to stay in bed, so they have to work together. If one blows it, they all blow it. Last night was our first night. I heard Kate coughing around midnight so I went in to see if anyone wanted a sip of water and to assure them I wasn't too far away and I do check on them when I am worried. I saw the cutest thing ever. Sam and Kate were cuddled up together in Sam's little twin bed. I found out this morning from Sam, he had a nightmare and asked Katie to snuggle with him. Jack said "we all worked together".

I am not a mean mom, but occassionally, when I know everyone is safe and content, I can laugh at my kids. I came home from a meeting last night and Mitch tells me. "I don't know what happened, but I heard an awful noise and then Jojo crying hysterically". I responded with something like "oh, no is he okay?"(I was certainly concerned). Mitch said "he's okay, there is a mark across his nose, all I can think is he may have 'clothes-lined' himself by the kitchen drawer". This is when I laughed (sorta snorted through my nose). I could literally picture him going full speed through the kitchen and BAM, completely leveled. He's fine. He's cute. And, yes a small scratch across his nose.

Mitch brought some window (gel) decorations home for the kids to put up around the front door. Yes, they are probably manufactured in China. Yes, it may not be wise to let little kids handle these. Yes. Yes. Yes. Regardless, they are in our home and look very nice on our front windows. Katie took the red ornaments and candy cane and put them on the wood work (white) of the fire place yesterday. As I cleaned things up mid-afternoon I pulled them off and discovered they had left their mark. Pinkish-red stains on three different places. No problem, Magic Eraser. No. Major Problem. Magic Eraser didn't do a thing!!! Panic. I spent the next hour scrubbing with a Magic Eraser, white vinegar, and baking soda. It took 20 minutes per stain, but the mess is gone. Learn from me readers, learn from me.

I picked up the kit (yes, a kit) and some extra candy and have plans to work on this with the kids. I had plans to do this last year, and it just never happened. Any tips experienced "builders"? I can assure you this will be done while Jojo naps, and I will (though it will pain me) give the kids creative freedom. Pictures eventually.

Dear Jack, Jack (not a typ-o, it’s Jack-Jack, like from the movie ‘The Incredibles’)

Dad and I are so excited that you are Rock Star of the Week. We know you bring a lot of personality, energy, and fun to Room ##. Continue to work hard, learn, play, and explore. Make new friends and try new things. You are a remarkable Hawk and we know you always have STAR behavior! Never stop trying, use your brain, because we know you can do anything!

At home Dad and I recognize every day what a wonderful and important part of Team Mayhem you are. Jack, you make us very proud and we appreciate all you do to make our family whole. We know some times it can be hard being the oldest brother, but you are so kind, understanding, patient, and helpful. You are not only an outstanding brother to Sam, Kate and Will, but you are their best friend and great role model. They love you very much and want to be just like you. Most importantly you never forget “we take care of each other”.

I talked to everyone in the family last week so they could help with your letter; here is what everyone said:

Brother Sam (age 6): You are a good brother. You are fun and you teach me things. I like when we play Lego's together.

Sister Kate (age 4): I like that you hold my hand. And, I like to give you hugs. I think you are really funny. I think you will be an artist when you grow up. I like when you come and watch me at ballet. I think you like broccoli.

Brother Will (aka Jojo, age 2): I said your name, Jojo just said “yes”. He giggled and smiled too!

Cousin Ryan (age 5): I miss Jack. He likes me.

Cousin Pete (age 9): I wish Jack lived here in Wisconsin so we could be in school together.

Cousin Libby (age 11): Here are just some of the reasons that I love Jack. He is very helpful and caring and a very good listener. He is super nice and he always includes me.

Aunt Emily: Jack is truly an amazing and unique boy. He is extremely kind but not weak and accepting of everyone. He is talented yet humble. He is a leader and a competitor and takes great pride in his accomplishments. He is always willing to help and is very unselfish. He is a very loving and loyal brother,son, nephew, grandson and friend. He is one of a kind!

Uncle Brad: Kind, considerate, serious, determined are words that come to mind when I think of Jack. Jack think back 2 years ago on 4th of July. Jack your goal was to water ski that day. After a ½ day of failed attempts you didn’t give up. By mid-afternoon you were skiing! Jack, this year on the 4th, you’ll be skiing like a Pro! I am so proud of you and honored to be your Godfather.

Aunt Niki: I love Jack for so many reasons. He is fun, gracious, energetic, smart, incredibly handsome...I could go on and on, and as my godson I LOVE to brag about him! But, I think the thing that says the most is, if I was a 3rd grader, I would WANT to have him be my friend ;-) I feel lucky to have been blessed to have Jack in my life and wish great things for him as he grows into an awesome young man. Love from Wisconsin!

Grandpa Doug: I love talking to Jack. He can be so serious about something and wise beyond his years. You can really have a good discussion with him and he knows what he is talking about. He seems to think things through, and at times he can kinda be the calm in the eye of the storm. So fun. He also watches out for his brothers and sister. Like the time he and Sam were reading over a toy car catalog I had, and upon coming across a woman in a bikini, he promptly brought it to me and stated that “this was not appropriate for Sam”, in a most serious voice.

Grandma Pat: When Jack was a baby 2 months old he started smiling and has never stopped. He just seems happy to be who he is and whatever he does he seems to make the most of it; he enjoys advancing in knowledge of people and things around him. Jack is a truly happy person!

Nonna: Jack is special because he has a way of making me feel very special. When I visit he asks me to make pancakes every time because he says they are the best. Plus he likes to hang out in my room, watch TV and talk with me. He knows he is never going to be too grown up to hang with his grandmother. Or, bunk with me when I visit. He is a great room mate!

Grandpa Jerry:Jack's special confidence gives him the enviable trait of recognizing and complementing others successes with a sincere smile. His positive can do attitude and his many interests makes him a pleasure to be around.

Mom: You have been my sweet boy from the beginning. I love you for your gentle and sensitive spirit, your ability to be a good friend, and for caring for everyone so much. When you are sad it breaks my heart, but when you smile it melts my heart and lights up the room. Thank you for loving me. I love you.

Ooooohhhhhh, and of course! I love you for always rocking-out-with me in the kitchen!!! It’s some times the best part of my day! I have so much fun with you. You are “DYN-O-MITE” and I think you might be on “The Edge of Glory” because I know you “Move Like Jagger”!

Dad: Jack, these words won't do it justice but here I go. I love that you have passion for the things you enjoy, whether that is football, movies, books or video games. I love that you have compassion for people and pets. I love how when you do something, whether that is doing homework or playing a game, you do it the right way; the way it is suppose to be done. I love that you like to learn, that you are inquisitive and that you share your knowledge with me. I love your ability to remember things. I love the way you treat others. I love that you are kind. I love your smile. I love that you are my son. Simply put, I love you.

Our Rock Star

Jack is Rock Star of the Week (next week). And, we've been asked as a family to write a letter about Jack to be read during class on Wednesday. I think about my first-born and the pride, joy, and love overwhelms me. Seriously. Tears in my eyes right now. I haven't started to write a word and I am a sappy mess. How can I ever put into words how much this boy means to me, our family, the World? Yes, I said the World. I look forward to writing the letter (with the help of my family) and making sure next week is extra special. Jack, my sweet boy, I am grateful everyday because of you.

It was a big day for Kate today. Her 4 year well child appointment this morning. That means she is getting ready for Kindergarten and required 4 shots. She had fun with Dr. P showing her how smart, fun, and active she is. Screamed and cried during her shots, but perked up when we headed to the mall for a carousel ride and lunch. And, Daddy showed up at lunch with this flashing reindeer nose! How cute was she leading us around the mall? Very. (Can't believe I managed a picture when the nose flashed!!!)

Really, I can't remember the last time I polished my nails. This may not have been the most "professional" color (OPI: Yoga-TA Get This Blue) choice, but Miss Katie inspired me to paint my nails. I painted hers last night--each a different color. So, mine got painted while sitting in the van this morning during the boy's drop-off. Multi-tasking at it's finest.

Pinterest: Christmas Tradition

So my idea, isn't original, I found the idea on Pinterest. The idea is this: Wrap 24 Christmas books you already own. Kids get to pick which one is read that day. Stack under tree. Half the fun of presents is unwrapping them. What a fun tradition.

Now, I didn't have 24 books, so I hit the second-hand store over my lunch hour to load up (had to use some Winter themed books too) and am ready to wrap and kick off this new tradition on Dec 1st. I love that this is age-appropriate for all the Mayhems! I will keep you posted on what the kids think of this new tradition.

Sam is losing teeth left and right. And, I've been working hard to get one particular tooth out and it's STILL there. See that tooth, right there in the middle? It's my menace. I suppose in a day or two it will be gone, but frankly Mitch and I think it's about the ugliest thing, just hanging in the middle of Sam's face. Maybe I am just desperate to have a child with a big gap-y grin! I am sure there will be an "after" picture before Monday.

Sam wasn't feeling well yesterday, so he came home from school around 11:30am. I work until 12:30 so Mitch dropped him off at my office. I enjoyed the company and wasn't a bit surprised that he felt well enough to eat his lunch and play his DS. Hmmmm.
